http://www.google.com/profiles

Sign up and not only can you fill in the basic link section to “My Blog”, “Follow me on Twitter” but you can also fill out details about you and make sections of the text a link to you.

That’s right, it’s a page Google is going to find quickly (it’s on their site!), you can backlink several different pages off each profile you create (just don’t go overboard) and you even get to pick the keywords used in the link!

SEO can be broken down into two main topics, on page and off page. Off page SEO encompasses a lot of things but they are all essentially about building backlinks to your site. I’ll be talking about this a lot in these updates but today I want to talk about what you can do on your site.

Firstly let’s clear something up. People talk about “wanting to rank higher in Google” but this doesn’t make any sense on it’s own. What you want to do is rank higher in Google for specific keywords/phrases that relate to your site. You already have a number one spot for your site. Go type in your website’s name into Google (eg www.KickStartSEO.com) and you’ll find yourself at number 1.

But being number one for your site’s name doesn’t really help much. Afterall, if they know the name of the site they’re not going to search for it, they’re going to go there. So what do we want to rank for?

We want to rank for things people really search for so we can attract those people to our site. So step one is to find out what keywords are worth ranking for in your niche. To do this you can go here -

https://adwords.google.co.uk/select/KeywordToolExternal

That’s Google’s completely free tool to help you figure it out. Simply go there, type in something your site is about and it’ll make loads of keyword suggestions, estimate how many searches they get and what the competition is like when bidding on Adwords (not that we’re going to pay Adwords prices for our traffic).

I’ll talk some more about keyword research and analysis another day but for now let’s focus on the relevance to on page SEO. Once you know what keywords and phrases you want to rank for you need to create content about it. Just mentioning something on your site isn’t enough, we want to create pages entirely dedicated to a keyphrase. Let’s say I have a site all about low carb diets. So I use Google’s tool to find out what people are searching for related to it.

There’s no way we’re going to compete with the big guys for the main keyphrase itself (estimated at 200,000 searches a month) but we can go after the lower traffic lower competition terms like “low carb diet reviews”. Just 1,200 competing sites but worth a couple of hundred searches a month.

So now we create a page dedicated to “low carb diet reviews”. You want to put that phrase in the URL (eg www.yoursite.com/lowcarbdietreviews.html), in the title (Top 10 low carb diet reviews), in the body text (a couple of times), in the meta tags (keywords and description), in the alt text of images and definitely as the text for any internal links that come here. Now you’ve left the search engines in no doubt what this page is about. And believe me, for lower competition phrases that’ll get you on page one on it’s own.

And that, in a nutshell is on page SEO. Tell Google what this page is about and you’re far more likely to rank for it than mentioning the phrase once on a page about something else.

I’ve gone on for long enough today so I’ll talk about boosting those rankings with backlinks another time. I hope this has helped you better understand on page SEO.
